Another event with National Museums Scotland, this time at their Wartime Experience event at the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune. This event has been running for a few years now and featured re-enactors from WWI and WWII as well as all sorts of other activities such as period singing, dancing and even hair do’s for the ladies.

We were there with Falkirk and District Wargames Club running participation games for people attending the event. Colin Jack provided the game scenario and scenery and we used the Bolt Action rules to run a game based on an action at St Lambert-sur-Dives in August 1944. We were set up in one of the museum hangers right beside Concorde.

In our game Canadian troops were attempting to plug the Falaise Gap and had to capture the village to prevent the trapped Germans escaping via a bridge over the River Dives.

The game was a public participation game and a decent number of people joined in throughout the day.

Next door the Falkirk Club put on two WWI games, a naval encounter from WWI and this game of Wings of War which saw aircraft battling over the trenches in 1917.

There were lots of re-enactors outside, including a lot of WWII Germans

There were also British

and some WWI highlanders with these rather splendid field kitchen re-enactors who were serving food to all the other re-enactors, British and Germans alike.

Not all the re-enactors were military, these women were dressed as WWII civilians.

And the Blitz Sisters, provided period music and backed up a dancing display with public participation.

A fun time was had by all and we’re very much hoping we’ll get an invitation back next year.

The National Museum of Scotland is hosting an exhibition about Vikings just now and last Sunday they hosted a wargames event at which members of the public could see what wargaming is all about.

Four of us from SESWC went along and put on a game using the Sea Wolves variant of the Dux Britanniarum rules that were published in the TooFatLardies Christmas Special for 2012.

Dave, Jack, Derek and Jim (left to right)

The game involved a Viking attack on a Scots village. It was heavily scripted and designed to allow the Vikings to put the Scots under some pressure before being sent flying from the field. We wanted to keep the home crowd happy and the Scots were definitely cast as the good guys for the day.

In the pictures below you can see the Vikings about attack.

While some Scots Levy desperately try to form up to resist, inspired by the local priest..

The Scots were heavily outnumbered and the Vikings soon put them to flight, rounded up all the plunder, slaves and animals they could find and got ready to head back to the ships.

When part way there they saw a large Scots force advancing to cut them off and started to form a shield wall.

At this point the fighting got desperate and we enlisted some help from the audience.

A good time was had by all, despite the Scots almost ruining the script by rolling terrible dice. Luckily we had some cavalry on hand to help them out if necessary.

Also participating in the event were the Falkirk and District Wargames Club, who put on a game of Impetus, also featuring Scots vs Vikings at the Battle of Cruden Bay. You can read more about their day on the Lead Warrior blog.

Their table had a more substantial Scots village

And large numbers of people playing.

The Edinburgh Games Hub, in conjunction with 6’stohit ran a painting demonstration and participation game where people could paint up a Gripping Beast plastic Viking before using it in a battle. Their painting table was kept busy all day and about 80 people took part, lots of them children. Here’s some of them.

There was also small scale participation game, Men of the Sword

All in all a good day. We spoke to a lot of people, including several who had played Warhammer in the youth and who were interested to see the historical side of things. And we might even have got a new member out of it.
