I have just sat down and attemted to base my Portuguese Cavalry. Theseare Front rank figures. I thougt we had discussed 3 to a base of 60 x 60 and 2 figures on a 40 x 60 base. I am finding this is very tight, in fact my command won't fit in line, I may be able to get them on this but they will be staggered.
IIRC, we were/are basing cav. on 20x60 per figure. Like you I'm also using Front rank models, and they are big. To that end, after having a test of what works for my first cav. unit (irregular lancers and a few unfortunate French losing an eagle ), I've decided to use 45x60 Litko bases per two figures. This also gives me a little more space for scenic details, etc., etc. At the end of the day, I don't think the little extra width matters under Barry's rules, as all the elements in the unit are considered to be fighting during close combat.
Cheers,
John.

Ian, I wouldn't worry too much about it. John is correct in saying that under the rules all the figures in the unit take part in melee but I have noticed that guys that use Front Rank figures tend to stagger them on the base so that the figures have one foot behind the other. Having a slightly wider frontage also doesn't penalise your unit by having more enemy being able to charge them as only one unit can charge into contact anyone else can only support the main combat. My British infantry are based 20mm per figure as opposed to 15mm in the rules basically as they were painted for the 1812 war where slightly looser formations were used but I also feel that it better represents the Brits fighting in 2 ranks compared to the Europeans fighting in 3 ranks. My Russians are based on a 15mm frontage. Hope this helps? Dave
Dave/John, thanks for that think they wil fit but it is tight but can get away with staggering, all the horses are in a canter type pose so the stagger won't look quite so out of place if as it might have done if they had been standing.
